Pop-up Park Van Loenshof

On a crisp spring day, right between the clatter of shopping carts and the buzz of crowded terraces, something special happened in the heart of Enschede. Where normally only stones, bicycles and hurried footsteps could be found, a green surprise suddenly appeared: a Pop-up Park.

It began with curious glances. “What’s happening here?” a passer-by whispered, gripping his shopping bag a little tighter. Within a single day, a grey spot in the city centre transformed into a lively, green oasis. Planters appeared like puzzle pieces clicking perfectly into place. Benches invited people to sit down for a moment. A stage stood ready for music and stories. Picnic tables waited for sandwiches, coffee and good conversations. And beneath it all lay fresh green artificial grass, softly springing under every step.

Everything – truly everything – was made from 100% recyclable materials. The planters, the stage, the benches, even the picnic tables and the artificial grass: all produced from recycled plastic. What may once have been a bottle, a package or another everyday item was given a second life here. And you could feel that – not only in the materials, but in the story behind them.

Even the plants took part in this circular adventure. After the Pop-up Park ended, they would not disappear or be thrown away. Instead, they returned to the greenhouses to recover, grow and bloom again. Until, at another time and in another place, they could make people happy once more. As if the park itself was breathing – coming and going, yet never truly disappearing.

Something beautiful soon began to happen. People lingered. Where they normally moved purposefully from shop to shop, they now took a seat on a bench. A mother enjoyed a coffee while her children played on the artificial grass. Two students worked on a project at a picnic table. A street musician tested the stage and drew a small audience. Without anyone really noticing, the time people spent there increased. The atmosphere changed.

With this temporary park, SBME hopes to achieve something lasting: to spark demand for more greenery. To start a conversation. To encourage the municipality to think about what becomes possible when space is given to sustainable ideas. Because if a temporary park can already make such a difference, what could a permanent green vision bring?

And so the Pop-up Park became more than a collection of plants and benches. It became a meeting place. A moment of calm. A source of inspiration. A living example of circularity in action.

Right in the middle of the city, among shops and shoppers, a place suddenly appeared where time seemed to tick a little more softly. Where people looked at each other instead of passing by. Where green not only added colour, but also connection.

A unique green oasis in Enschede. And perhaps – just perhaps – the beginning of something bigger.

This project is an initiative of the property owners in Enschede’s city centre and was carried out by Stichting Binnenstadsmanagement Enschede (SBME) in collaboration with the municipality of Enschede. Special thanks to Nedaplast and Oaselease.
